The holiday season is a time of joy, connection, and celebration. There is music, laughter, and anticipation of a new year. However, for sexual abuse survivors, this time of year can bring a unique set of challenges and triggers. Navigating the holidays as a survivor requires intentional self-care, reflection, and seeking support. Trees of Hope offers strategies and resources to help survivors cope during the holiday season. 

Understanding Triggers

Holidays can evoke memories of past trauma. Family gatherings, traditions, and, in some cases, having to see people tied to their abuse can trigger post-traumatic stress. By identifying these triggers, survivors can better prepare themselves and establish boundaries to protect their mental and emotional well-being. 

Establishing Boundaries

Survivors must set clear boundaries with friends and family. If certain events, people, or social situations are triggering, declining an invitation or limiting participation is perfectly okay. Prioritizing well-being is paramount; survivors do not need to feel obligated to explain why they may disengage. It’s important to acknowledge the progress they have made towards healing and treat themselves kindly. 

Self Care

Incorporating journaling, prayer, and exercise into a daily routine can help survivors manage stress and anxiety. Self-care is essential all year long but becomes critical during the holidays when the focus is more common.

Therapy and Counseling

Consider reaching out to a therapist or licensed counselor who specializes in trauma and abuse. Therapy can provide a safe place to explore feelings, develop coping mechanisms, and work through challenges that may arise during the holidays. Trees of Hope has an in-house counselor who is specially trained to work with sexual abuse victims. We have partnered with Hope Christian Counseling to offer virtual or in-person 1-on-1 counseling sessions.*


Seeking Support

Joining a support group for survivors can offer a sense of community and shared understanding. Trees of Hope offers a group setting supporting Sur’s healing journey.
